I have been lucky enough to be able to work with what interests me most of all, horses and dressage riding. Regardless of the incredible amount of work, long (and since moving to Norway) cold days and for many years very poor salaries, the delight of riding, being close to and learning from the horse has been so much stronger.
After graduating from school I sold my pony and went to Maryland in USA to work for a year on Glenwood Farms. A stud farm that bred Swedish warmblood horses. One year became four years and I had a fantastic time – helped with the breaking in of the young horses and the breeding work, started in competitions, helped in the quarantine stable with the covering of the test mares and the riding of the quarantine stallions. I also had the opportunity to travel a little in the United States.
When I finally decided to return to Denmark I worked for a year and a half in a riding equipment store in Copenhagen. Although I learned a lot about equipment for horses and had some challenging experiences - i.e. a trip to Argentine to order saddles – it was not enough riding for me. I decided to try my luck in Germany.
In 1997 I went to Germany and was employed as ‘Pflegerin’ on Gestüt Wiesenhof. I took the job as ‘pflegering’ with the firm conviction that if I was just allowed to ride 1 horse a day it would soon be more and I was right. After 6 months I was riding all day. Working with horses in Germany requires a lot of willpower, it is tough with long hours and a lousy salary…. but, I was allowed to ride good horses.
In 1998 I started working for Heiner Schiergen and with him I really got the possibility to improve my riding. With Heiner I had the opportunity to ride many very different horses and during my second year with him I started competing on young horses and customer horses. With the riding of many different horses and the very high level in Germany you are forced to perform your very best all the time. This has resulted in an enormous discipline in my daily work with the horses. Results require lots of hard work.
In 2002 I was invited to take the German Bereiter examination, ‘Pferdewirth Schwerpunkt Reiten’, and I spent 2 exciting weeks in Warenhof which resulted in passing the examination with distinction. Before and during the examination I started reading the old riding lesson books from Germany and for the first time I could put into words what I felt when riding and what I read about the education scale. With Heiner I was given the possibility to watch, ride and learn from the best of the best – Heiner, and the horses... Elvis, Goethe, World Congress, Excellent, Slow Fox V, Daidalos just to mention a few of them.
In 2003 I moved to Norway – I who had claimed that I would never leave Germany... But, I had met my future husband, and I was pregnant. Also I was exhausted after having worked from 7 AM till 9PM for 6 years. I moved to Lønset without ever having been there and ended up half up a mountain in a tiny village, but 25 km away in Oppdal a large riding centre was waiting to be taken hold of.
In the autumn of 2003 I took over the running of the centre. At that point there were 3 riding school ponies and 3 privately owned horses in the centre.
During the last few years the activities of the centre have increased considerably. There are now 27 horses in the centre and 60 pupils ride every week in the riding school. In addition to that I have travelled around and given lessons especially in Trondheim. For me it has been very good to try to "stand on my own legs". To make thing happen yourself has been as beneficial as the years in Germany and came at the right time for me.
